What to expect at your free orthodontist consultation

If you’ve never been to an orthodontist, odds are you may be wondering what happens at an orthodontist consultation.

At Vivid Orthodontics, we know your time is valuable, which is why your free orthodontist consultation combines what normally takes three visits into one appointment. Our goal is to answer all of your questions at this visit so you leave with a comprehensive plan in place for you or your child.

What happens at a braces consultation?

Step 1: Diagnostic Records

The initial visit will begin with one of our Treatment Coordinators taking X-rays and a series of photos to help our doctor diagnose what treatment, if any, is needed.

We take two X-rays in our office: a panoramic X-ray and a cephalometric X-ray.  A panoramic shows all of the teeth, jaws, joints and surrounding structures. It also allows our orthodontist to assess if there are missing teeth, extra teeth or any impacted teeth.

A cephalometric X-ray offers a side view of the entire skull. Dr. Michel utilizes this X-ray to view the relationship between the upper and lower jaws and evaluate the airway for any obstruction or constriction.

The series of necessary photos are taken with a traditional camera and will include different views of the face and teeth.

Step 2: Examination

After X-rays and photos are complete, Dr. Michel will do a comprehensive exam to evaluate for any issues including overbites, under bites, crossbites, open bites, crowding, spacing and much more. He’ll also look at all of the X-rays and photos taken to determine if any deciduous (baby) teeth remain and check the eruption progress of the permanent teeth.

Step 3: Orthodontic Consultation

The last step of the free orthodontist consultation is for Dr. Michel to make his recommendation for treatment. A treatment plan will be discussed in detail and financial estimates will be gone over.

If your child is not ready for treatment, they will be placed on our recall program to monitor their growth and development. These visits allow Dr. Michel to jump in at the right time and treat your child when they are at the right age and tooth development.
