How to take care of teeth after braces come off

The big day has finally come. Your braces are coming off and you get to see your brand-new smile after braces. Now what?

You’ve invested a lot into that fresh smile, so it is important to follow these three tips on how to take care of your straight teeth after braces.

1. Wear your retainers.

Our doctors cannot stress this enough. When they say, “retainers are forever,” they mean it. The only way to prevent teeth from shifting after treatment is to consistently wear retainers at night. That means every night. Even if you have a bonded wire behind the front teeth on top or bottom, removable retainers still need to be worn.

It’s also important to know how to take care of retainers after braces come off. If you lose your retainers or they become a chew toy for your dog, please contact us to get in for an appointment to make new retainers as soon as you can.

2. Visit your dentist every six months.

After orthodontic treatment, it is important to continue to visit your dentist regularly. Your smile after braces depends on it. Your dentist and hygienist keep your teeth sparkling clean and monitor you for any restorative work that may be needed such as fillings, crowns and more. They also check the health of your gums and evaluate for periodontal disease.

If you haven’t had your wisdom teeth removed by the time orthodontic treatment is finished, your dentist will continue to monitor them and make the recommendation for if or when they should come out.

3. Keep up with your home care routine.

It’s still just as important to brush and floss every day after braces come off. Continue to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day after orthodontic treatment is complete. Keeping your teeth clean will help ensure that your smile after braces lasts for years to come!
