Uncomfortable impressions for braces a thing of the past!

Goodbye goopy impressions, hello digital scanning! At Vivid Orthodontics, digital scanning has replaced getting impressions for braces and aligners, making starting your orthodontic treatment easier than ever.

How does a digital scanner, the alternative to dental impressions work?

Our iTero digital scanner uses a wand with a camera on the end to capture images of your teeth. One of our assistants simply glides the wand along the front, back and biting surfaces of your teeth. Just like that, we have a digital impression of your smile.

The process is much quicker than the old way to get impressions for teeth straightening. A digital scan takes about 5-10 minutes and can be done the same day you’re ready to start orthodontic treatment.

What can you do with digital impressions for braces?

The better question is: What can’t we do with digital impressions? Digital impression scanning allows us to make several appliances including expanders, retainers, crossbite appliances, splints and more.

When it comes to traditional braces, scanning is the first step in creating your treatment plan. It helps our doctors determine how to move your teeth. The scan also allows the doctors to have your braces ready to go when you come to have brackets placed. Rather than putting on one bracket at a time, the doctors can transfer all your brackets seamlessly, which means a more comfortable experience for you when starting treatment.

Scanning, the alternative to dental impressions, also plays a vital role for patients taking advantage of aligner systems, such as our Confident Aligners or Invisalign. Once we have a digital scan of your teeth, we can create your Confident Aligners in-office using our 3D printing technology. If you are working with Invisalign, the scan is used to create your aligners once our treatment plan is complete.

See your smile before you start

Digital scanning is a helpful tool for patients who want to see what their end result will be prior to starting orthodontic treatment with aligners. Thanks to these digital impressions for braces, our doctors can set up your treatment plan, show you how the teeth will be moved and present the final outcome before we ever insert your first aligner. Scanning also helps us determine if teeth need to be removed or if other procedures such as crowns and implants will be needed as part of your orthodontic plan.

Using impressions for your smile’s final touch

Traditional impressions are usually necessary at the end of treatment if the doctor determines retainers need to be made the same day your braces are removed.
