Invisalign® FAQ’s: What you need to know

Invisalign® is a well-known system for achieving a beautiful smile, but a lot of questions arise about the process for the treatment. So, we’ve rounded up some common frequently asked questions to give a guide on what to expect with Invisalign®.

How does Invisalign® work?

One of the most common Invisalign® FAQ’s is about how the system actually moves teeth.

Invisalign® works as a series of removable aligners that each have a small amount of movement within the aligner. Each aligner is typically worn for 5 to 7 days before moving on to the next aligner. Aligners also utilize attachments to help with movement of the teeth. Attachments are small resin bumps placed on certain teeth to help guide them into the proper position.

What are the steps for getting started with Invisalign®?

Visiting our office for an initial complimentary consultation is first in line for getting started with Invisalign®. If Dr. Michel determines you are a candidate for Invisalign®, you’ll have a digital scan taken of your teeth to allow him to set up your treatment plan. Once the treatment plan is set, Dr. Michel will send it through to Invisalign to have the aligners fabricated.

When your aligners arrive at our office we’ll call to set up an appointment for the initial placement. Attachments will be positioned on the necessary teeth and the first set of aligners will be inserted. Dr. Michel will make sure everything is fitting perfectly before sending you home with multiple aligners to change.

Appointments every 8 to 12 weeks are necessary to monitor movement, change or remove attachments, and provide more aligners as treatment progresses.

What is the wear and care for aligners?

Aligners need to be worn almost full time. In fact, 21-22 hours of wear each day is ideal. Aligners should only be removed when eating, brushing or drinking anything that isn’t water. Consistent aligner wear is necessary to achieve favorable treatment results. If aligners are not being worn consistently, Dr. Michel may ask you to switch to traditional brackets for treatment.

Keeping aligners clean is simple. Remove the aligners and brush them with a soft toothbrush. You can also soak the aligners with a denture cleaning tablet to keep them fresh.

How long is Invisalign® treatment?

Invisalign treatment time varies by case depending on the amount of movement necessary. Treatment times often range between 9 to 24 months.

Dr. Michel will do his best to give you an estimated treatment timeline prior to getting started. He will keep you updated if at any point he feels your treatment timeline is going to differ from what he estimated.

When treatment is complete, Dr. Michel will remove any attachments and fabricate a set of removable retainers to be worn nightly to hold the teeth in their new position.
