Orthodontist vs. Dentist: Who should you see?

An orthodontist and dentist combined are a dream team when it comes to your oral health. They work together to create a comprehensive plan to ensure your smile not only looks great, but also functions properly. However the question still remains; when should you see an orthodontist vs. dentist?

What services are provided by an Orthodontist vs. Dentist?

Orthodontists are specialists that study how your teeth are aligned, how they function and the way your bite fits together. They also evaluate the position and size of your jaws.

Utilizing a variety of appliances, orthodontists primarily correct overbites, underbites, crossbites, crowding, spacing and open bites.

In addition to going to dental school, orthodontists continue their education by being accepted into and completing another two to three-year program to specialize in orthodontics. They make sure that when you are done with orthodontic treatment your bite allows you to function, speak, and chew properly.

Dentists have the same initial education as an orthodontist, but they perform different services. A dentist will monitor the overall health of your teeth and gums and will make recommendations if they notice any inflammation or infection. They also take care of your restorative needs such as fillings and crowns.

Should you visit your dentist while braces are on?

Absolutely! Visits to your general dentist are especially important during your orthodontic journey. While Dr. Michel monitors your need for orthodontic treatment, your dentist will evaluate the overall health of your teeth and gums.

Dr. Michel works with dentists on a regular basis to create treatment plans for patients. In fact, several patients are directed to our office based on a dentist recommendation. During a routine cleaning or exam your dentist may notice a potential problem that could require orthodontics. They notify you of the potential issue and refer you to our office for a complimentary consultation.

After you’ve been to our office for a consultation, we will notify your dentist of any treatment that Dr. Michel recommends. Our office continues to communicate with your dentist during orthodontic treatment to ensure that the dentist stays up-to-date on our treatment plan.

Working together, Dr. Michel and your dentist will help create a smile to last a lifetime.
