Braces FAQs

Got Questions?

Explore away! We’ve got answers.

Q:

Other than a beautiful smile, why should I get braces?

A:

Straight teeth don’t just look good – they also create better health because:

  • Are easier to clean
  • Create open airways for better breathing
  • Treat the underlying cause of jaw and chewing pain
Q:

When do I need to get braces?

A:

Children should get an initial exam from an orthodontist by age seven, when permanent teeth first start to come in.

Adults should come in when they want:

  • To fix teeth that have shifted as they age
  • The beautiful smile they couldn’t afford when they were younger
  • To prevent long-term damage or to reduce other health issues
Q:

What kind of braces do I need?

A:

We’ll figure that out during your first visit, but it will likely be:

  • Traditional metal braces
  • Ceramic (clear) braces
  • Clear aligners
Q:

Does wearing braces hurt?

A:

When first put on and after each adjustment your mouth may be a little sore for a short time. After a few months, you probably won’t notice your braces anymore.

Q:

How long will I have to wear the braces?

A:

This is one of our most common braces FAQs, and the while the answer is generally a year or two, an exact answer will depend on the problems we’re addressing, the treatment needed and the age of the patient. And the better you take care of your teeth—and your orthodontic braces—the less time the process will take.

Q:

Do I need a referral from a dentist?

A:

Nope! Dentists may discover problems and refer to you an orthodontist, but a referral is not necessary.

Q:

How much do braces cost?

A:

The cost of braces varies based on the treatment needed. Many dental plans will cover some of the cost and we offer a number of payment plans and options to help create more affordable braces. As part of your free consultation, we’ll discuss the full cost of your treatment.
