As backpacks get packed and alarm clocks start ringing again, it’s time to help your student get back into the school year groove. While you’re picking up school supplies and planning lunches, don’t forget to prepare their smile, too!

Whether your child is in braces, aligners, or just starting their orthodontic journey, a little planning goes a long way. We’ve put together a simple back-to-school checklist to keep their treatment on track and their confidence high!

Pack a Braces Care Kit

Keep a small kit in your child’s backpack with:

  • A travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Floss with floss threaders or floss picks
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Extra rubber bands
  • A labeled case for aligners, retainers, or removable appliances
  • A compact mirror

Pro tip: Never wrap a retainer, aligner, or appliance in a napkin—it almost always ends up in the trash! A sturdy case keeps it safe, clean, and easy to find in the lunchroom or locker.

Don’t Forget a Mouthguard for Sports

If your child plays school or recreational sports, a mouthguard is a must—especially with braces! It helps protect their teeth, brackets, and soft tissues from impact. We offer complimentary orthodontic-friendly mouthguards that fit comfortable and provide protection athletes need. Ask for one at your next appointment or stop by the front desk during office hours to pick one up. Finished with treatment? We also offer custom-fitted mouthguards to protect their beautiful new smile long-term—perfect for sports seasons to come!

Plan Braces-Friendly Lunches

Crunchy chips, sticky candy, and hard foods can cause bracket damage or delays in treatment. Opt for soft, easy-to-chew lunches like pasta, rice, wraps, yogurt, or cut fruit. A refillable water bottle is also a great way to rinse after snacks or meals.

Create a Daily Smile Routine

Back-to-school means new routines. Help your child build good habits:

  • Brush after breakfast and again after lunch (if possible)
  • Floss once a day
  • Wear aligners or rubber bands as directed
  • Store aligners, retainers, or appliances properly during meals

Take a “Before” Picture

Smile progress can be easy to miss day to day. Snap a “before” photo now so you and your child can look back and see how far they’ve come during the year!

Talk About It

If your child is new to braces or aligners, it’s normal for them to feel a little nervous. Remind them that lots of classmates are going through the same thing—and that this is a short chapter in the big story of their smile.

At Vivid Orthodontics, we’re all about making orthodontic care simple, positive, and even fun. If you ever need supplies, advise, or a quick adjustment, we’re just a phone call away.
