What is an iTero intraoral scanner?
An iTero scanner is a handheld camera that captures thousands of images of your teeth and gums and stitches them into an accurate 3D digital model. Nothing is injected, nothing sets in your mouth, and you can breathe and swallow normally the whole time.
What replaced the impression putty?
Traditional impressions meant a tray of silicone putty pressed against your teeth for several minutes while you tried not to gag. For patients with a strong gag reflex, a narrow palate, or plain anxiety, that was the worst part of orthodontics. The scan is the direct replacement, and it is the part patients comment on most in our practice.
How long does a scan take?
A full scan is typically a matter of minutes, and it can be paused. If you need a break, we stop and pick up where we left off, which is not something putty allows.
What can you see on the screen?
Your model appears as we go, so you can look at your own bite from angles you have never seen. It is a much better conversation than pointing at a plaster cast, and it is why so many patients understand their crowding or crossbite for the first time in that chair.
Why is a digital scan more accurate than a putty impression?
Fewer distortions and fewer retakes
Putty can pull, tear, or shift when it is removed, and a distorted impression produces an appliance that does not fit. A scan captures geometry directly. When a section is incomplete, the software flags it and we rescan that spot in seconds rather than redoing the whole thing at a second appointment.
Better data for planning tooth movement
A precise digital model is the foundation for planning every movement in a case. When we design an aligner sequence, small inaccuracies compound across dozens of trays, so starting from clean data matters more than it sounds.
Records that do not degrade
Digital models are stored, not shelved. We can compare where your teeth started against where they are today, which makes progress visible and helps us catch a tooth that is not tracking as planned.
How does CBCT imaging fit alongside scanning?
Surfaces versus structures
An intraoral scan captures the visible surfaces of teeth and gums. It does not show roots, bone, unerupted teeth, or the airway. CBCT imaging captures those structures in three dimensions, and we use it when a case calls for that level of information.
Where 3D imaging changes the plan
Impacted teeth, unusual root angles, surgical cases, growth and development questions, and airway-focused treatment are all situations where seeing beneath the surface changes what we recommend. Planning around what you can only guess at is how avoidable problems happen.
What does in-house 3D printing actually do for patients?
Once your digital model exists, it can be printed. At Vivid Orthodontics we print aligners, retainers, and appliances in our own office rather than shipping every case to an outside lab.
Shorter waits
A traditional workflow means mailing a case out and waiting on a lab queue and shipping in both directions. Printing on site removes that round trip. When a retainer breaks the week of a wedding or a tournament, the difference is not academic.
Consistent fit and easy replacement

Aligners made where your doctor works
We offer Invisalign as well as Confident Aligners, our own in-house aligner brand. Producing aligners in the same building as the doctor planning your case means adjustments can be made and printed without a lab acting as a middleman.
Appliances beyond aligners
Expanders, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances come out of the same digital workflow, so the fit at delivery tends to be closer on the first try.

Does the technology replace the orthodontist?
Software proposes, a specialist decides
Treatment planning software can simulate tooth movement beautifully, and simulation is not diagnosis. Deciding which movements are safe for your roots, bone, and jaw joints, and in what order, is clinical judgment. Dr. Michael J. Maslowski and Dr. Brian M. Why the same tools produce different results

Technology does not remove supervision
Digital tools make treatment more precise and more comfortable. They do not make in-person monitoring optional, which is the assumption that gets patients into trouble with unsupervised, mail-order aligner treatment.
What should you expect at your first digital scan?
Before the appointment
No preparation is needed. Come as you are; a normal brushing is plenty.
During the scan
You will sit back, and a team member will move the wand slowly over your upper arch, lower arch, and then your bite. You can swallow, and you can ask to pause. Most patients are surprised at how ordinary it feels.
After the scan
We review your 3D model with you, discuss what we see, and lay out options, whether that is braces, aligners, early treatment for a child, or simply monitoring growth for now. You can see what else happens at a consultation before you come in.
Frequently asked questions
Does an iTero scan hurt?
No. The wand does not cut or press into tissue; it takes images. Patients with a strong gag reflex generally find scanning far easier than putty impressions.
Is a digital scan the same as an X-ray?
No. An intraoral scan photographs surfaces and involves no radiation. X-rays and CBCT imaging show roots and bone, which is separate information, and we use each for what it is good at.
Are 3D printed retainers as durable as traditional ones?
Retainers are designed for the material and use they are intended for, and any retainer lasts longer with good habits: keep it in its case, keep it away from heat, clean it as directed. If yours cracks or stops fitting, tell us early rather than going without.
Can my digital scan be used to make a new retainer years later?
Often yes, as long as your teeth have not shifted since the model was captured. That is one of the practical advantages of digital records over plaster on a shelf.
